Elon Musk Supports California’s AI Bill SB 1047

Elon Musk has expressed his support for California’s SB 1047, a bill that requires creators of very large AI models to establish and document safeguards against potential serious harm caused by these models.

“This is a difficult decision that may not sit well with everyone, but considering all factors, I believe California should move forward with passing the SB 1047 AI safety bill,” Musk stated on social media platform X on Monday afternoon. “I have been advocating for AI regulation for over two decades, similar to how we regulate any product or technology that poses a potential risk.”

Despite his commitment to move xAI, his own large AI model company, out of California, Musk would still be subject to SB 1047’s regulations. He has previously highlighted the risks associated with uncontrolled AI development.

On the other hand, competitor OpenAI has publicly expressed its opposition to the bill, endorsing an alternative proposal instead.
